Library Steps
In 2001, at the request of a client, the Edward Barnsley Workshop produced a set of folding library steps. They caused quite a stir when they were exhibited and James Ryan, the designer, realised there was a gap in the market. He got a lot of enthusiastic feedback. Clearly there were people looking for an elegant solution to the problem of how to reach objects on a high shelf. It is hard to find attractive purpose designed contemporary library steps.
James subsequently designed a new set of steps that were both practical and beautiful. They could stand close alongside a bookcase. They had three feet so they would not wobble and with their flowing curves they had the strong visual appeal of a graceful sculpture. James called his new design Aspire and it was an instant hit. Several versions of the Aspire library steps have been made in the Barnsley Workshop. Each new version has been given subtle design modifications or been made in a different timber.
