Historic properties are full of character and charm. Every room tells a story, and every detail has been carefully considered over the years. When it comes to furnishing these special spaces, off-the-shelf furniture just doesn't feel right. Bespoke, handmade furniture is the perfect way to find the ideal match for your property.
We handcraft wooden furniture. Barnsley furniture respects the past while meeting the needs of today.
In this blog, we'll explain why bespoke furniture is ideal for historic properties. We'll also share a real-life example of how we created elegant, custom chairs for the 500-year-old dining hall at Magdalen College at Oxford University.
Reflecting on the Story
Historic homes and buildings were made with care and skill and built to last. The details were designed to impress. Bespoke furniture continues this tradition. Every piece is thoughtfully crafted to complement the style, age, and atmosphere of the property. In our Magdalen College project, the bursar asked us to replace their dining chairs, which were second-hand, falling apart, and approaching the end of their life. We saw this as an opportunity to create something special, chairs that would look completely at home in the historic hall and be strong enough to last for many years to come.
Why Bespoke is Perfect for Historic Property Furniture
Historic properties are full of character and charm. Every room tells a story, and every detail has been carefully considered over the years. When it comes to furnishing these special spaces, off-the-shelf furniture just doesn’t feel right. That’s where bespoke furniture comes in.
Barnsley furniture is handmade English wooden furniture that’s perfect for heritage furniture collections.
Made for Your Unique Space
No two historic properties are the same. From unusual layouts to intricate design details, they each have their own personality. Bespoke furniture is designed specifically for your space.
For Magdalen College, we started with our “Grace” chair design, shown above. It’s elegant and timeless, but was originally made for domestic settings. Chairs in a dining hall, however, face heavier use and need extra strength. We adjusted the design, reinforcing the structure to handle daily wear and tear while keeping the look just as graceful. We also streamlined the making process to meet the college’s budget, ensuring the project stayed on track without sacrificing quality.
Built to Last, Designed to Age Gracefully
Bespoke furniture isn’t just about looking impressive, it’s about standing the test of time. The materials are carefully chosen, and the craftsmanship ensures they will age beautifully.
For the Magdalen College chairs, we used oak and we kept it in its natural colour. Over time, the oak will develop a rich, golden patina that fits the historic setting perfectly. While it’s tempting to try and match the look of old wood with stains or finishes, this can wear unevenly. Letting the wood age naturally creates a timeless look that grows more beautiful as the years go by.
Adding to the Story
When we worked on the dining hall at Magdalen College, we were very aware of the building’s history and significance. Replacing over 110 chairs was a significant job, but seeing the hall transform was incredibly rewarding. The new chairs brought a fresh sense of order and elegance, while still feeling like they belonged to the hall’s centuries-old story.
