The 'Harmony' chair is one of a series of scorched oak pieces designed by James Ryan. James says, ‘I am really excited by this chair. I like its lightness and comfort. The chair is upholstered in leather and made from Hampshire oak, carefully seasoned in on our drying sheds. All the chair’s components are worked by hand into rounded shapes that are soft to the touch. The blackened finish is important, visually, because it unifies the components. The finish is achieved by first scorching and then wire brushing the surface of the wood. Finally, a solution of vinegar and iron oxide is applied to react with the tannins in the oak and turn the chair a deep black. The Barnsley Workshop stamp, date and maker’s mark can be found on a back leg.
This chair is 50 cm wide, 56 cm deep, and 96 cm high.
