Easy Chair “Connolly”

This chair was designed by James Ryan (b.1972) taking inspiration from an earlier Edward Barnsley design. The new chair was created in collaboration with Connolly England. The seat and back are covered in Connolly’s signature Vaumol leather.

The chair frame is made using from oak from the Scottish Borders. The oak was cut at a sawmill in Northampton and then dried in the Barnsley Workshop’s seasoning sheds.

This new design of chair required some innovative making techniques, firstly the one piece arm and back leg uses a tapered lamination technique to retain strength but allow the component to vary in thickness. The seat and back support has quite a sophisticated joint technique again to add strength where required.

The end of the arm has a hand gouged  texture added by James Ryan to add a tactile element to sitting in the chair.

The chair is 74 cm wide, 74 cm deep and 83 cm high. The Barnsley Workshop stamp is on the inside of the front rail.

The chair is the first in a limited edition of 12.
